Become a ring-tailed lemur on the island of Madagascar and collect as many prickly pears as you can. Mada by Sophia Wagner, with design by Clara San Millán, is a pocket-sized Helvetiq card game for 2 to 5 players aged 7 and up, in about 20 minutes.

Mada is a hand-management and risk-taking game that stays intense right to the end. On each turn you choose one of three actions: play a card, draw a card or take a risk. Every card you play must be equal to or higher than the previous one. High cards bring you more points, but they also end the round faster – which may help you or one of your opponents. At the end of each round, players win prickly pears unless they lost them, so you constantly weigh up how far to push your luck. Special cards add surprises and interaction: Lemurs, Double Lemurs and Scorpions can turn a round around when the others least expect it. The deck has 60 cactus cards with values from 1 to 13, plus 10 special cards. The game ends as soon as one player has collected five cards, and whoever has gathered the most prickly pears wins. Sophia Wagner enjoys creating strong experiences with very few rules, and Mada – her seventh published game – is quick to explain and fits easily into a bag.
