Hula-Hoo! – Up and Down, Faster and Faster 🌀🃏

Keep your hoop spinning for as long as you can. Hula-Hoo! by Jacques Zeimet, illustrated by Mélanie Garanin and published by IELLO, is a quick card game for 2 to 6 players aged 8 and up.

The aim is to get rid of all your cards – or to make all the other players drop their hoop. Each player starts with five cards in hand plus five open cards in front of them, and on your turn you may play either one of your open cards or one from your hand. The first player plays any card and asks the next player to go “higher” or “lower”. That player may follow the request, or “double” by playing the same card as the player before. Once a double is on the table, each following player must double again or break the double with a neighbouring card or a joker. A player who cannot play drops their hoop and is eliminated from the round. When only one player is left standing, or when someone has discarded all their cards, that player receives as many cards as were played during the round – and those cards count as points. Rounds are short, so you soon find yourself watching every card and deciding whether to keep it simple or risk a double. The first player to reach 77 points wins the game.
