Beer & Bread – Keep Your Brewery and Bakery in Balance 🍺🍞

Founded on the fruitful lands of an old monastery, two villages have kept up the tradition of brewing beer and baking bread. Beer & Bread by Scott Almes, with artwork by Michael Menzel (Deep Print Games), is a strategy game for exactly 2 players aged 10+.

Each of you represents one of the two villages. They share fields and resources but take pride in their friendly rivalry. Over six years, which alternate between fruitful and dry, you have to harvest and store resources – water, wheat, barley, rye and hops – produce beer and bread, sell them for coins and upgrade your facilities. Fruitful and dry years have the same four phases but play out a little differently, so you need to plan ahead for the lean times. The cards are at the heart of the game: there are 30 beer cards and 30 bread cards, with three types of each, worth more or fewer coins. The twist comes at the end. After the sixth year, you only score the coins from the type of good – beer or bread – for which you earned less. So it is no use becoming a master brewer if your bakery stays empty: you have to keep both in balance. The village with the higher score wins.
