Yoxii – Trap the Totem 🗿🪵

Yoxii is an abstract strategy game for two players by Jérémy Partinico, illustrated by Tom Delahaye and published by Cosmoludo. Often compared with chess or Go, it is easy to learn yet full of decisions: move the totem, place your pieces and close the trap at the right moment.

The yellow totem starts in the centre of a board of 37 squares. On your turn, you first move the totem one square in any direction. You can also jump it over pieces of your own colour to chain moves and reach a spot where the terrain favours you. Then you place one of your pieces on a free square next to the totem's new position. Each player has 18 wooden pieces with four values: O is worth 1 point, II is worth 2, Y is worth 3 and X is worth 4 – and there are only three of the 4-point pieces, so choosing which value to place, and when, is a key part of the strategy. The game ends when the totem is completely surrounded and can no longer move. Then you add up the values of your pieces around it, and the player with more points wins. For young children, there is an easier way in: play with the pieces turned over, using colours only. The rules are included in several languages, including Slovenian.
