Hokito – Storm the Stacks 🏯🪵

Hokito is an abstract strategy game for two players by Claude Leroy, illustrated by Tom Delahaye and published by Cosmoludo. Often compared to checkers, it combines simple rules with real depth, and the tension lasts until the very last move.

Each player has 18 wooden pieces in black or white, engraved with values of 1, 2 or 3. They start on the first three rows of a 6 × 6 board on your side – placed by choice or, in a variant, at random. On your turn, you move a piece orthogonally exactly as many squares as its value – but only occupied squares count: empty squares are simply jumped over. A single piece must end on another single piece, and a stack must end on another stack, whatever its colour. The piece on top controls the stack, and you can only move stacks you control. Covering your own pieces early is risky, because anything covered stays covered until the end. As soon as a player cannot move any more, the game is over and points are counted: each stack you control scores the value of its top piece multiplied by the number of pieces in it. So every move and every stack must be carefully calculated – a tall tower under a 3 can decide the game. The rules are included in several languages, including Slovenian.
