Žive besede – Letters You Can Step On 🔤👣

Learning that moves. Žive besede (Living Words), published by Most in Ljubljana, is a movement game in which children get to know letters, sounds and words by stepping on them – for ages 4 and up and for one or more players.

A play mat printed with the letters of the alphabet is laid on the floor. Children step onto individual letters, recognise them and connect them into words. Physically the game is a little like Twister, but its focus is on letters, creativity and fun, which makes it especially appealing for children who would rather explore the world on the move than sitting at a table. Younger children, from about 4, start by stepping on a letter they are asked for – vowels first – then consonants are added step by step to build short words such as M + E = ME, with pictures and examples from the instructions to guide them. Children can also race to be the first on the right letter. Older children, from about 5, take turns stepping onto letters to build words together, and further variants add competition, words that are acted out in mime and other playful twists. The game suits home, kindergarten and school, supports early reading and helps develop concentration, memory, cooperation and communication along the way.
