Small World Underground – When in a Hole, Keep Digging ⛏️🐉

Small World is crowded again – this time beneath the surface. Small World Underground by Philippe Keyaerts, the original Small World designer (Days of Wonder), is a stand-alone game for 2–5 players aged 8+, taking about 30–90 minutes.

Each turn, you pick a combination of a fantasy race and a special power, then use their tokens to conquer regions of the underground world and collect victory coins. When your race has spread too thin, send it into decline and choose a new one – timing that switch well is the heart of the game. The box brings 15 new races and 21 new special powers. Some regions are occupied by monsters that guard Popular Places and Righteous Relics: defeat them and you claim a place or relic with a strong power of its own. Relics can be taken from one race to another, so they change hands as the game goes on. Underground rivers protect your regions but also let you travel quickly across the board, and the Volcano cannot be conquered at all. Two double-sided boards fit each player count, so the map is always just tight enough. Play Small World Underground on its own, or combine it with other Small World game elements.
