Codenames XXL – The Word Game, Twice the Size 🕵️🔎

Codenames XXL is the double-size version of Codenames by Vlaada Chvátil, winner of the Spiel des Jahres 2016, from Czech Games Edition. Bigger cards make it easier for larger groups to see the table, with all the fun of the original.

Two rival spymasters know the secret identities of 25 agents. Their teammates know the agents only by their codenames, single words laid out in a grid of 25 cards. The spymasters share a key card that shows which words belong to each team, which are innocent bystanders and which one is the assassin. Taking turns, each spymaster gives a clue made of one word and a number: the word links several cards on the table, and the number says how many. Teammates then point to one card at a time. A correct guess means they can keep going, up to the number plus one. A card of the other team or a bystander ends the turn, and the assassin loses the game at once. The first team to find all of its agents wins. With large cards in a card stand, everyone around the table can read the words, which helps in a big group and for players who find small print hard to read. A round takes about 15 minutes, so spymasters can switch and play again.
