Magenta: Fives – Every Card Has a Secret Five 🃏💜

All your cards are themselves – but also a magenta 5. Fives by Taiki Shinzawa, from CMYK's Magenta line, is a trick-taking card game for three or four players with a sneaky twist on the back of every card.

The game follows classic must-follow rules with a fixed Silver trump suit: if you can follow suit, you generally must. But the reverse side of every card shows a magenta 5, and in many cases you may play one of your cards face down as a Magenta 5 instead. Only one Magenta 5 may appear in any trick, so timing matters. The winner of a trick takes all the cards played to it and stacks them with their own card on top. At the end of the hand, the visible top cards of your won tricks are added up. Land on 25 or less and you score – the closer to 25, the more points – but go over 25 and you lose points. That turns every trick into a little game of chicken: do you want to win this one, or let someone else take it and push their total too high? After four hands, the player with the most points wins. Small box, quick rules and lots of tense decisions make it a good fit for card players who enjoy classic trick-taking with a modern twist.
