Odin – Beat the Middle, Empty Your Hand 🃏🔢

Odin from Helvetiq is a quick shedding card game by Gary Kim, Hope S. Hwang and Yohan Goh, illustrated by Crocotame. It is for 2 to 6 players aged 7+ and a round takes about 15 minutes.

The deck has 54 cards numbered 1 to 9 in six colours, and everyone starts with nine of them. On your turn, you either pass or beat the cards in the middle of the table. To beat them, you play the same number of cards or one more, all showing the same number or the same colour, and their value must be higher. The value is read by arranging the digits from highest to lowest, so a 2 and an 8 together make 82. After playing, you take one card from the set you beat into your hand and discard the rest, which means your hand does not always shrink as quickly as you hope. A hand ends as soon as someone plays their last card, and everyone else scores a point for each card still in their hand. The game ends when a player reaches 15 points, and the player with the fewest points wins. The rules also suggest shorter or longer games to 10 or 20 points, and in a two-player game two colours are removed.
