Scythe – Farming and War in 1920s Europa ⚙️🌾
It is a time of farming and war, broken hearts and rusted gears, innovation and valour. Scythe by Jamey Stegmaier, with art and worldbuilding by Jakub Rozalski (Stonemaier Games), is an engine-building, asymmetric strategy game for 1–5 players set in an alternate-history 1920s.
Each player represents a fallen leader trying to restore their honour and lead their faction to power in Eastern Europa. You conquer territory, enlist new recruits, reap resources, gain villagers, build structures and activate powerful mechs. Every faction starts with different resources, abilities and a hidden goal. Turns are quick: there are no rounds or phases, you simply choose an action on your player mat. Every part of the game builds your engine – upgrade actions to make them more efficient, build structures that improve your position, enlist recruits for ongoing bonuses, deploy mechs to deter invaders and expand your borders to reap more resources. There is plenty of direct conflict, but no player elimination, and combat is driven by your choices rather than luck. Luck appears only in the encounter cards you draw when meeting the people of newly explored lands and in combat cards that give you a temporary boost. A solo rulebook is included.
